Meet the Cast and Crew of Dracula:
October 26, 2015 ·
Count Dracula will be played by the multitalented voice actor extraordinaire JM Specht!
You won't want to miss JM's transformation from withered age to youthful vitality, from Transylvanian nobility to British impostor, as Dracula employs every trick up his sleeve to coerce, beguile, and feed on the unsuspecting people of London. Onstage at The VORTEX Nov 20 - Dec 12.
October 27, 2015 ·
Our Professor Van Helsing is no stranger to the world of Different Stages (or challenging accents for that matter)...it's Austin's own Beau Paul!
Come see Beau impart the wisdom of the Dutch as everyone's favorite cryptic professor in his 6th show with Different Stages! With his ragtag team (including a doctor, a lawyer, and an up-and-coming stenographer), can Van Helsing defeat the forces of darkness and vampirism or will they all end up...down for the count?
Find out Nov 20 - Dec 12 at The VORTEX!
October 28, 2015 ·
Been wondering who will play Mina Murray? It's none other than recent B. Iden Payne award winner Taylor Flanagan of course!
Follow Mina as she races against time to unravel the mysteries of her best friend's sudden illness, while her closest allies and fiancé attempt to protect her from both the Count and the truth about what he really is. As danger looms, will Mina figure out a way to stop Dracula's rise to power or will the web of secrets and lies be her undoing?
You'll see Nov 20 - Dec 12 at The VORTEX!
October 29, 2015 ·
Is anyone steering this ship? Let's not forget to introduce Dracula's Director: the absurdly accomplished and invariably lovely Melissa Vogt.
If you are a theatre-lover, chances are you've been treated to her work as Managing Director at The VORTEX, seen some of the masks she's created, attended a play she's written, or experienced one of her award-winning performances. Which is why we are so lucky that Melissa will be at the helm of this ambitious, cinematic, Victorian RomDramedyThriller. With the benefit of Melissa's rich background in directing, performing, and the visual arts, Different Stages' Dracula is sure to thrill, disturb, and delight. Tickets are on sale now!
Nov 20 - Dec 12 at The VORTEX!
October 30, 2015 ·
And now to introduce our dear Lucy: a rising star of the Austin theatre scene and recent B. Iden Payne award nominee, Jessica Riley.
At first glance, it seems like everything is coming up roses for Lucy Westenra, but a terrible storm and a crew-less ship have brought an unknown danger into her life. And suddenly choosing between her three eager suitors is the least of her troubles.
Prepare to have your heart broken in every way by Jessica's portrayal of this beloved character Nov 20 - Dec 12 at The VORTEX!
November 1, 2015
But who has been trusted with the daunting role of Dr Seward's pet project and resident mad man, Renfield? This year's winner of the SFBA Theatre Critics Circle's Solo Performance Award: Charles Stites.
Join Renfield as he descends into delicious madness, dallies with coherence and sincerity, and struggles against the siren's call of darkness. You won't want to miss Charlie's depiction of this sympathetic murderer and twisted pawn Nov 20 - Dec 12 at The VORTEX!
November 4, 2015 ·
Dracula isn't the only evil force to contend with in this production. Let's not forget that girls also want to have fun...while they tie you up and drink your blood.
Meet Austin newcomer Sara Blair, one of our three devious vixens. But don't let Sara's kind face fool you! She may have a fairytale employment background teaching parents of young children about the benefits of playing pretend, but I wouldn't trust her character with any young ones, if I were you.
November 4, 2015 ·
Meet Jessica Medina, a fierce performer and lover of all things vampiric. This production will be her 6th with Different Stages and will mark the end of her nine-year hiatus. We couldn't be happier to have her back! Even if her character would totally murder us in our sleep. Just kidding! She'd make sure we were awake first. ;)
November 4, 2015 ·
Meet our third bloodthirsty vixen: the lovely Bridget Farias Gates. You may know her through her work as the Artistic Director of the Emily Ann Theatre, or as Hecuba in Trojan Women, or as the mother of the cutest child on the planet, but soon you'll know her as one of the 3 stars of your nightmares.
Find out what evil deeds these vixens are capable of Nov 20 - Dec 12 at the Vortex!
November 5, 2015 ·
Our Jonathan Seward is funny yet poignant and he's no stranger to the role of scientist. In fact he may have already blinded you with science in For Fear the Glass May Shatter or Stars and Barmen. Have you guessed yet? It's Vortex company member, Trey Deason in his fourth show with Different Stages!
Poor Doctor Seward just can't catch a break. He knows he is on the verge of the next big psychological discovery of modern civilization, but his most promising patient keeps attacking the hired help. And now he must call on his trusted mentor, all the way from Amsterdam, because the love of his life has fallen deathly ill and none of his precious science seems to help her.
Dracula opens 2 weeks from tomorrow at The VORTEX and tickets are already on sale!
November 10, 2015 ·
Meet recent UT graduate and genuine sweetheart: Will Douglas! He'll be making his Different Stages' debut as our unsuspecting, up-and-coming Solicitor, Jonathan Harker.
Come see him embark on a voyage to exciting and distant lands, where strange people reeking of garlic give him hurried, cryptic warnings about his new client, the elderly Count Dracula. Armed only with his travel journal, a rosary, and his love for his fiancée, Harker's chances don't look good up against a creature who has survived for centuries and can hypnotize literally anything he wants. But I wouldn't count him out yet!
Only 10 days until all is revealed. So get your tickets now!
November 10, 2015 ·
Last but not least: long-time friend of Different Stages and multiple award winner, Craig Kanne will complete the cast!
You may know him from one of his many performances with Different Stages, or seen his work in children's theatre, or perhaps you experienced his performance as the Marquis de Sade in the decidedly not child-friendly "Quills," or maybe you are freshly arrived from Iceland and have never seen him in anything. Whatever the case may be, we're excited to have him on board!
Just 10 days until this killer ensemble hits the stage. You won't want to miss it!

Meet the Cast and Crew of 4000 Miles:
February 18, 2016 ·
Meet 4000 Miles' Bec: the delightful Andrea Flowers!
What is your favorite thing about your character?
"I feel that my character, Bec, is a braver version of me. I actually aspire to be more like her. She is outspoken and unapologetic. I also think she's a really great example of a feminist. She is fair, and logical but at the same time trusts her heart to make most of her decisions. She is also incredibly philanthropic and travels around the world helping different communities in need--- safe to say, I have a girl crush on Bec. Who wouldn't?"
About Andrea (AndreaFlowers.net):
Andrea is an actress, singer-songwriter, vegan, cat-lover, born and raised in Austin. After obtaining her BFA in Acting at Southern Methodist University, she has returned to Austin for a pitstop on her way to her next adventure in the Big Apple. Different Stages is glad she's with us for 4000 Miles before she starts her new life in New York this summer and we wish her luck!
To catch Andrea's performance, come on out to 4000 Miles March 11th - April 2nd at Howson Hall in the First Unitarian Universalist Church!
February 28, 2016 ·
Meet 4000 Miles' Amanda and Lily: the captivating Christine Hoang!
What is your favorite thing about working on this show?
"4000 Miles really stretches my acting range, as the characters I play (Amanda and Lily), aside from having Asian immigrant parents who escaped Communist regimes, are so different from the person I am in real life. Amy Herzog's writing is beautifully loaded with subtle discovery, so every rehearsal is like a treasure hunt where I go home feeling like I unearthed another hidden gem."
Can you tell us a little about your characters?
"Amanda and Lily are nothing alike, other than the fact that Leo thinks they sort of facially resemble each other. Amanda is spoiled, superficial, and deliciously sassy - a really fun character for me to play as an actor. When around Leo, Amanda can be either sides of the magnet. Depending on which side he approaches, there is either a strong attraction or a strong repulsion, a definite push/pull. Lily, on the other hand, is vulnerable, sweet, confused, and very beloved. Unlike Amanda, she is not temporary; she is fixed and has claimed a part of Leo for eternity."
About Christine:
She's an attorney by day, a born-again artist by night, and a wife and mother 24/7. She also founded Color Arc Productions in 2015 -- with a mission to shine light on diverse stories. Earlier this year the FronteraFest piece she created with her husband (Two Fathers: The Vietnam Vet & The Vietnamese Refugee) got Best of the Fest 2016. And, on top of everything else, she started a singing group with her lawyer friends called Law Cappella. We're so happy that she has made time in her busy life for this beautiful play. Come see her in action March 11th - April 2nd at Howson Hall in the First Unitarian Universalist Church!
February 29, 2016 ·
Happy Birthday to 4000 Miles' Leo: the captivating Will Gibson Douglas!
How are rehearsals going?
"I'm excited by this beautiful script by Amy Herzog and am really responding to some similarities in my life that are reflected in my character's journey. Though at first the play seems simple, it is actually really subtly complex, there is so much going on under the surface, which is so exciting as an actor. There is so much discovery to make! I'm excited to be working with Different Stages again and especially with this stellar cast and creative team!"
Can you tell us a bit about your character?
"Much to his family's chagrin, Leo doesn't own a cellphone and doesn't apologize for it. He's a modern-day hippy. He is a young person going through that period of life where he has to face the real world and try and find his place in it, while still being true to himself. (A journey I am all too familiar with.) He wears a smile as armor. In the face of tragedy, he buries it deep down, trying to maintain a wide-eyed and innocent worldview. He loves deeply, but often doesn't know how to translate it to words or actions. He is incredibly complex and human and I often find myself equally frustrated and in love with him. In short, I love telling his story and can't wait for people to share it with!"
About Will:
Will grew up in Rockport, TX, where he started performing in the 3rd grade. He came here to study theatre at University of Texas and has been acting in the Austin theatre scene since graduating two years ago. While primarily an actor, he is interested in expanding his artistic sensibilities to directing/producing and getting back to photography and singing, hobbies that for various reasons got put on the back burner in college. Will also enjoys walking people's dogs and pet sitting. You won't want to miss Will's performance March 11th - April 2nd at Howson Hall in the First Unitarian Universalist Church!
March 4, 2016 ·
Meet 4000 Miles' Vera: Austin theatre royalty Jennie Underwood!
Can you tell me about your character?
"I get to play a feisty 91-year-old grandmother whose 21-year-old grandson is staying with her after a tragic accident. Their relationship is complicated by the cramped living quarters of a NY apartment and all the family history that has gone before. Vera, my character was a card carrying communist back in the day and has remained a political activist all her life."
What do you like best about the script?
"I like Four Thousand Miles because it depicts how complicated relationships can be and that we all are ever evolving and growing, no matter how old we are."
What is it like working with your wife as a Director?
"I always enjoy working with Karen because we get to obsess about the play over and over."
About Jennie:
Jennie has been involved in the Austin theatre scene since she and Karen moved here in 1991. During those 25 years, she has worked with some amazing actors and theatre-makers and won the hearts of many audiences along the way. Recently you may have seen her in the critically-acclaimed Terminus or any number of powerhouse performances. Whether you've had the good fortune of seeing Jennie onstage before or not, you'll love her in 4000 Miles! See you March 11th - April 2nd at Howson Hall in the First Unitarian Universalist Church!
March 10, 2016 ·
Meet 4000 Miles' Director: the charismatic and clever Karen Jambon!
What do you love about 4000 Miles?
"The play has been fascinating to work on because, at first sight, it seems very simplistic. But the more you dig in, the more you realize how layered it is. Amy Herzog says a lot in a very economical way so we have enjoyed exploring all the nuances of dialogue and character."
What's it like to direct your phenomenal wife?
"I always love working with Jennie not just because she is such an amazing actress but because we can go home after rehearsal and obsess about the play and her character. I am also fascinated by the fact that [Jennie's character] Vera is based on [Amy Herzog's] own grandmother who is still alive and kicking and actually took part in the Occupy Wall Street protests (in her 90's!)."
About Karen:
Karen loves theatre of all kinds. She adores Austin's vibrant artistic community and the fact that we have such diverse types of theatre here. Outside of doing and seeing theatre, Karen also loves traveling, reads a lot, does volunteer work with Breakthrough Austin and the Austin Children's Shelter, and lets her dogs train her to do their will. Different Stages has been lucky enough to work with Karen and Jennie for many years and we hope to continue to do so for many more.
See you at 4000 Miles March 11th - April 2nd at Howson Hall in the First Unitarian Universalist Church!
